Greening the Caribbean’ company tackling rubbish in the region to make an environmental impact

Yes, garbage gets a bad rap around the world, but Wayne Neale is working very hard to raise the status of rubbish in the Caribbean through his Castries, St. Lucia-based “Greening the Caribbean: Recycling & Waste Management Solutions” firm.

Neale, the company’s managing director, recently got an international boost to his efforts, by winning an international Sustainable Entrepreneurship Award and traveling to Vienna, Austria on Oct. 7 to receive the honor.

The St. Lucia-born, former Hollis, Queens resident accepted the Urban and Regional Development category honor from the awards group, which recognizes sustainable energy initiatives around the world and also awarded projects and companies from the U.S., Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Austria this year.

Josaphat Small of Recycle It – St. Lucia gives a philosophical, yet down-to-earth, talk about the benefits of recycling and proper waste management for present and future generations in a YouTube video.

The St. Lucia project, started in 2010, began providing recycling and waste management services to the island businesses earlier this year through a key partnership with the Recycle It St. Lucia firm — creating a one-stop shopping destination for the green disposal of waste for businesses.

What we actually do is establish workplace recycling programs for businesses. We train the staff on how to maintain a separation of waste, we provide the education materials, we do the collection and transport and the processing of the recyclable materials,” Neale said of the process made possible through a partnership with businessman Jofaphat Smalls’ established Recycle It St. Lucia firm.
